Keenan Jenkins: a testament to what Shared Apprenticeships can hold for the future generation of construction professionals
At CCTAL, providing support and access to the construction working environment, through the Shared Apprenticeship Scheme, is an integral part of what we do. Facilitating the opportunity for our apprentices to work under a variety of construction businesses allows them to forge solid knowledge and build a multi-faceted skillset, equipping them for a thriving career ahead in construction, no matter their discipline. The construction industry is not as linear as people may think, the educational and career pathways available are limitless. The journey of one of our amazing apprentices, Keenan Jenkins, mirrors this perfectly.
Keenan first transferred to Cyfle in November 2021, after realising he was unhappy at his traditional apprenticeship scheme, with a local employer. Upon enrolment, Keenan continued his carpentry apprenticeship with Cyfle Building Skills at Ammanford Campus, Coleg Sir Gar, where he furthered his site experience, added to his skillset, and completed his NVQ level 2 carpentry qualification in September 2022.
Inspired by his father’s journey and current role in construction, Keenan had the ambition to become a Responsive Building Inspector and decided to enrol on the Technical Shared Apprenticeship course at Neath Campus in September 2022. Supporting Keenan’s goal, Cyfle found him a placement with Carmarthenshire County Council as a Trainee Responsive Inspector. Now, in his new role, Keenan is thriving in a supportive environment, based at Cillefwr Depot in Carmarthen.
Under the guidance of his supportive manager at Carmarthenshire County Council, Ian Davies, Keenan is actively involved in inspecting public buildings across Carmarthenshire. But it was not always plain sailing for Keenan. He highlighted that attending Neath College for his Level 3 Construction in the Built Environment alongside employment is a challenge but realises that it is an investment in his future.
Following this qualification, Keenan aspires to complete a HND and eventually obtain a degree in Construction Management. Keenan’s dedication to learning and progressing in the construction industry is evident as he attends college one day a week alongside his employment, enhancing his knowledge for future career advancements.
Speaking on his journey, Keenan said:
“Cyfle Building Skills stepped in when I needed it the most. They not only provided employment but also invaluable support and guidance. In addition to Cyfle’s help, my tutor at Ammanford College, Huw Jones, was amazing. He helped me catch up on NVQ work missed during online learning, ensuring I stayed on track despite the challenges posed by COVID.
“Working with the Council has also been a dream come true. The support has been brilliant, and I am now inspecting public buildings, addressing safety concerns, and contributing to maintaining Council buildings. I love the busy nature of the role and the fact it takes me all over Carmarthenshire. I could not ask for a better environment to be in.”
Keenan has also been involved with the next wave of apprentices. He added:
“Mentoring a new apprentice and contributing to the implementation of a new maintenance job management system within the Council has been rewarding. I am grateful for the opportunity to make a positive impact on the team.”
Keenan’s journey, supported by CCTAL and Cyfle Building Skills, exemplifies the transformative power of apprenticeships. As he progresses in his role at Carmarthenshire County Council, Keenan’s story stands as a prime example of the potential unlocked through hard work, dedication, and valuable mentorship.
Ian Davies, Manager at Carmarthenshire County Council, said:
“I have had the pleasure of witnessing Keenan’s remarkable journey and professional development during his time here at Carmarthenshire County Council. From the moment he joined as a Trainee Responsive Building Inspector, Keenan exhibited a commendable dedication to his work and a thirst for knowledge.
“His journey, supported by Cyfle Building Skills, exemplifies the spirit of growth and resilience that we value within our team. Keenan’s commitment to inspecting public buildings, addressing safety concerns, and contributing to maintaining Council buildings has been truly commendable. It is evident that his experiences, coupled with the mentorship he received, have played a pivotal role in shaping him into the talented professional he is today.
“We are proud to have Keenan as part of our team and look forward to witnessing his continued success in the dynamic field of Property Maintenance.”
