Choosing a construction apprenticeship
Rhodri Thomas, a 23-year-old site engineer, is currently in his fourth year of a Construction Management and Technology degree apprenticeship. Inspired by family members working in construction, Rhodri was drawn to the practical and problem-solving aspects of the industry. With the guidance of Cyfle, Rhodri secured an apprenticeship with Morgan Construction Wales, renowned for its commitment to developing young talent.
Rhodri shares: “Morgan Construction Wales has been instrumental in my journey. They make sure I fully understand every activity and process, encouraging me to try things myself. That hands-on experience has boosted my confidence and technical knowledge.”
Day-to-day life as an Apprentice
At Morgan Construction Wales, Rhodri is involved in a variety of tasks essential to project success. He collaborates with site teams daily to review and implement engineering designs for drainage systems, foundations, road layouts, and essential utilities. Using advanced tools like Topcon GPS software, Rhodri ensures accuracy in setting out foundations and infrastructure while troubleshooting challenges that arise on-site.
Development at Morgan Construction Wales
Morgan Construction Wales has been instrumental in supporting Rhodri’s development, providing a comprehensive range of training opportunities that have significantly enhanced his skills and confidence in the construction industry. Rhodri highlights:
“MCW gone above and beyond by offering courses like the Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) and Working at Height, alongside more technical training like surveying and setting out. These have given me the skills to perform my role safely and effectively.”
Among the standout experiences, Rhodri completed a four-day Setting Out and Surveying course at CITB, which laid a strong technical foundation for his role. Morgan Construction Wales has also ensured he receives essential health and safety training, including Working at Height, Asbestos Awareness, Abrasive Wheels, and other critical certifications. This combination of technical and safety-focused training has not only expanded Rhodri’s expertise but also reinforced the importance of maintaining high standards of safety and efficiency on-site – key to his growth and success in the industry.
Championing the next generation and their ideas
Regularly taking on apprentices, Morgan Construction Wales values the perspectives of younger professionals, creating an open and positive learning environment where ideas are encouraged, and innovation thrives.
Rhodri shares: “MCW actively encourage me to share my ideas and involve me in decision-making processes. Knowing my input is valued motivates me to think creatively and approach challenges with confidence.”
The team’s continual support has empowered Rhodri to contribute meaningfully to discussions and problem-solving on-site. Whether offering practical solutions or suggesting small adjustments to improve efficiency, his ideas are “consistently sought after and implemented.”
“There isn’t a single standout example where my input has felt valued because this happens on a weekly basis at Morgan Construction Wales,” he explains.
The company’s positive culture ensures every team member plays a part in delivering the high standards Morgan Construction Wales is known for, with even small contributions making an impact. For Rhodri, being part of such an inclusive and innovative team has strengthened his skills and confidence, making every step forward a shared success, personally and for the company.
Morgan Construction Wales’ investment in Rhodri’s overall growth has allowed him to excel massively, “Being able to apply what I learn at university directly to on-site scenarios has been incredibly valuable. It’s helped me connect theory with practice, making me feel fully prepared for a future in the industry”.
The role of young people in construction
Reflecting on his own experience, Rhodri advises young people considering a career in construction to embrace the variety of roles the industry offers, from engineering to hands-on trades. “Every day brings new challenges and opportunities to develop both technical and interpersonal skills,” he says.
He believes young professionals are vital to the industry’s future, bringing fresh perspectives and a willingness to innovate. “Young people help drive the industry forward by adopting new technologies and approaches to problem-solving,” he adds. By supporting them now, the construction sector ensures a pipeline of skilled professionals to maintain high standards, encouraging long-term growth and protecting the future of construction.
