At CCTAL, we celebrate our members, like Morgan Construction Wales, who are prioritising investing in young professionals and innovation within the construction industry. By offering apprenticeships and real-world experience, they are equipping the next generation with the skills and confidence needed to thrive. Leia’s story highlights how guidance, education, and hands-on learning can unlock potential and create rewarding career paths in a field full of opportunities.

Journey into Construction

For Leia Bovett, an apprentice at Morgan Construction Wales, the journey into construction began in school. “I chose Product Design/Engineering as one of my GCSE options. It was my favourite class because of how interesting it was and how well I took to it,” she explains.

This passion led her to a college open day, where she explored both engineering and civil engineering courses. “After taking them both, I found civil engineering a lot more intriguing, so that’s what I decided to study.” This pivotal choice set Leia on the path to becoming a civil engineering apprentice – a role that allows her to combine hands-on work with academic development.

Day-to-day life as an apprentice

Since joining Morgan Construction Wales, seventeen-year-old Leia, has been gaining a wealth of experience, working both on-site and in office settings. One of her key contributions has been helping the company digitise its Health and Safety forms using FastField, a digital form-building tool. “I’ve taken to the software very quickly and gained an outstanding knowledge of how to use it. This will improve accuracy and save time, making the process more efficient”, Leia says.

Alongside her work, Leia is completing the Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Construction & the Built Environment (Civil Engineering) at Neath College. After a full-time first year, she joined Cyfle’s shared apprenticeship scheme, allowing her to balance work and study seamlessly.

Support and training from Morgan Construction Wales

For Leia, the most rewarding part of working in construction is seeing projects come to life. “From the first blueprint to the final structure, every step involves tangible progress,” she says. The teamwork and hands-on nature of the work make it deeply satisfying.

She also appreciates the variety and challenge the industry offers: “No two days are the same, and it fosters personal growth and skill development in a dynamic environment.”

Morgan Construction Wales has been instrumental in helping Leia grow. “The team has provided mentorship and resources to help me develop my skills. My managers consistently offer constructive feedback, which has accelerated my professional growth and made me feel valued.”

Leia also feels encouraged to share her ideas and contribute to improvements. “For example, my input on digitising Health and Safety forms has had a meaningful impact,” she adds.

Driving change in the industry

Leia believes her generation is reshaping the construction industry with fresh ideas and a focus on innovation. “We’re more technologically proficient and focused on greener building practices. The industry is evolving, and young people are essential to driving that change.”

Morgan Construction Wales supports this shift by empowering younger professionals like Leia to bring innovative solutions to the table and make a real impact.

Leia’s time at Morgan Construction Wales has clarified her career goals. “The hands-on experience and exposure to diverse projects have broadened my understanding of the industry. I’m particularly interested in sustainable construction practices and innovative building technologies.”

To young people considering construction, Leia offers this advice: “Stay curious, be open to learning, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. The industry offers endless opportunities, but it takes hard work and patience to grow your skills. Every task, no matter how small, builds toward your future.”

Leia’s story highlights the value of combining education with practical experience and showcases how Morgan Construction Wales is committed to supporting young talent. By encouraging growth in skills and professional development, they are ensuring the construction industry continues to evolve and thrive.
