Matthew Thomas – Plumbing Apprentice at Geraint Williams Ltd
At CCTAL, we’re proud to partner with companies like Geraint Williams Ltd, who proudly support the development of young talent in within construction, and in their case, the plumbing industry.
One of their apprentices, Matthew Thomas, has shown exceptional commitment and growth since joining Geraint Williams, and his journey is a testament to the value of apprenticeships in building sustainable careers.
Matthew began his career in hospitality after leaving school but at 20, he decided to pursue a more stable and rewarding path. He enrolled on a plumbing course at Coleg Sir Gar, Ammanford Campus, where he quickly demonstrated enthusiasm and determination to succeed.
Through Cyfle Building Skills, Matthew secured a plumbing apprenticeship and was placed with Geraint Williams. After completing his first year, the company decided to employ him directly as a second year traditional plumbing apprentice, recognising his potential and commitment to the trade.
Matthew has thrived both in college and on site. At Coleg Sir Gar, he has been supported by his lecturer, Tony Dunne, who has guided him through the academic side of plumbing. Within Geraint Williams, Matthew has worked closely with Steff Williams, a highly experienced mentor, who has shared his knowledge generously, helping Matthew gain confidence and practical skills.
Matthew’s work so far has included council bathroom installations, adaptations, and maintenance projects, giving him valuable exposure to a wide range of plumbing tasks. Matthew has shown great enthusiasm and pride within all his work, embracing every opportunity and growing in capability.
The company strongly believe in supporting their apprentices not only professionally but personally. Matthew has expressed his appreciation for the patience and understanding shown by the team, as they have provided an environment where apprentices feel valued and supported.
Reflecting on his experience so far, Matthew said: “I am truly grateful to Geraint Williams Ltd for all their help and continued support throughout my apprenticeship. The company has been patient, fair, and encouraging, and I feel very fortunate to be learning and working here.”
Cyfle Building Skills have also recognised Matthew’s hard work and resilience, nominating him for the Youthbuild UK Awards. Matthew’s application was successful, and he was invited to the House of Commons on 15th October 2025, where he was Highly Commended at the ceremony. It was a memorable day for him, made even more special by the presence of his mother and brother, and his first visit to London.
Lynne Williams, Director at Geraint Williams, said:
“At Geraint Williams Ltd, we are extremely proud of everything Matthew has accomplished during his time with us. He approaches his work with real enthusiasm and a strong willingness to learn. His hard work at college is evident, having been nominated by Cyfle for the Youthbuild UK Awards, where he was shortlisted and Highly Commended for his achievements.
“We look forward to continuing our work with Matthew, supporting and mentoring him throughout his apprenticeship and helping him develop the valuable skills that will strengthen his future career.”
Matthew Thomas has shown what can be achieved through dedication, mentorship, and the opportunities provided by apprenticeships. We at CCTAL are proud to work with Geraint Williams, who have supported Matthew’s journey – we look forward to seeing him continue to develop as a skilled plumbing professional.
